The Town of Atherton hopes to build a $32 million Town Center to replace the buildings currently housing town services, the police department and the library. Many of the existing buildings are small, out of date, and do not meet seismic standards. After years of advisory committee and neighborhood meetings, the City Council recently endorsed the project’s master plan.
The plan calls for a new administrative building, library, parking, and a large “town green” between the administrative building and the library. The center will be bounded by Fair Oaks Lane, Ashfield Road, Maple Street and the train tracks.
The Town hopes to contribute $12 million of the costs, $9.8 million from library funds and $2.2 million in building department reserves. The remaining money, approximately $20 million, would need to come from private contributions. In 2012, Atherton voters had approved Measure L, which endorsed the building of a town center using private funds
